For my DSAA diploma I wrote a dissertation on joy and design. It was published by Design Makes Sense in 2020. My starting point was a text by Bergson describing joy as a mark of progress, something that gives flavor to existence.

When I realized that joy is a life-enhancing force, I set out to understand and encourage it. First of all, I was able to deduce that joy is of profound interest, as it enables us to overcome gloom or crisis. However, there's a tension here: design seems to be about the material, while joy is closer to the psychic, one touching the tangible and the other the affects. The challenge of my research was to bring this joy to design, and to examine its capacity to trigger intense, not superficial, joy.
